THE FOURTH LECTURE OF P.D. OUSPENSKY

I tried to discuss this under a new blog topic but somehow it failed to upload or to be saved and so I shall have to re-start as best I can, the discussion of this FOURTH LECTURE from THE PSYCHOLOGY OF MAN'S POSSIBLE EVOLUTION found in my paperback copy which I am using at present. The FOURTH LECTURE begins with the the study of 'CENTERS' and and the observation of their FUNCTIONS which most who begin to do this study do not understand, appreciate, and often dismiss or ignore, the VALUE of their experiences and observations, especially when they discuss such with those who are not connected with, interested in, or who have other 'theories and opinions' of all kinds, about the FOURTH WAY,THE WORK, THE SYSTEM,ETC.  The study and observation of the FUNCTIONS OF CENTERS will reveal that they work at DIFFERENT SPEEDS which means that they have DIFFERENT TIMES.   Since the slowest of the centers is THE INTELLECTUAL CENTER and its time we think is the ONLY TIME THAT EXISTS, that is, ORDINARY TIME. To understand how centers work at different speeds,it will be necessary to give some examples as to how to understand this from a scientific point of view and from other non-WORK or 4TH WAY

  1. Each CENTER has its own 'CENTER OF GRAVITY' and the study of all these indicates that these have many 'properties' and 'features', still unstudied, unknown, and often dismissed. that science does not know or recognize and demonstrates that the human body can still be a mystery which science has yet to render complete, even with advanced technology. The application of technology to the body is as old as man, from crude stone tools to the highly sophisticated instruments used and studies conducted today. From early on in the 19th century such research with technology has been ongoing. That is why I sometimes mention such devices and early theories, etc. here.

  2. An important topic to consider is that of NEGATIVE EMOTIONS that is covered in this lecture also. NO 'INNER DEVELOPMENT'IS POSSIBLE AS LONG AS MAN KEEPS & CHERISHES HIS NEGATIVE EMOTIONS!

  3. NEGATIVE EMOTIONS may indicate beginnings of HYSTERIA,INSANITY, or CRIME...We see this happening everyday when we read news accounts or watch television news etc. as recent events will show crimes, wars, violence, mass murders, rapes, etc. NEGATIVE EMOTIONS begin with the imitation of others around them when children are exposed to such....more on this will cover how these arise in people from childhood to adulthood.

  4. THE EMOTIONAL CENTER IS NEITHER POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE,that is, divided into two distinct sections or parts. Instead, this center is either emotionally PLEASANT or emotionally UNPLEASANT, something we do not ordinarily notice, let alone, understand. However, we should note, and perhaps have also observed this in the past,THAT PLEASANT EMOTIONS CAN TURN INTO UNPLEASANT ONES quickly, swiftly, and without any real 'provocation' but that imaginary ones can arise and lead to 'tragedies' and incidents we read and hear about these days, especially via media of all kinds.

  5. As Mr. Ouspensky points out, in 19th Century Psychology, with which he was most familiar, it seems, normal man did not have what moderns call, 'COMPLEXES' which were termed termed as 'IDEE FIXE' or 'fixed ideas',or fixations',though we do have many 'bad' features. As there seems little or nothing that is,what he calls, 'PERMANENT' in us,it means that those who do are INSANE.He further concludes that'ONLY LUNATICS HAVE A PERMANENT EGO'. We can all give examples of this latter group from history. Although the term 'EGO' has many meanings to both ancient and modern man, we have to find to what if may refer in the WORK and I leave that up to all of you.

  6. Far too many of us only exist in INTELLECTUAL TIME and not REAL TIME. We expend energies on and in EMOTIONAL TIME....and our bodies age and ache in PHYSICAL TIME...so what time is it now? Where in the HALLS OF TIME(not fantasy) do you spend your time? REMEMBER TIME DEVOURS ALL....
